Monsieur Lazhar

Last night we saw Monsieur Lazhar, a French-Canadian film.  Set in Montreal, it follows a new elementary school teacher who is a recent immigrant from Algeria seeking political asylum and the children in his class.  This brief description does not do justice to its complexity because it is not about what you might think based on reading the preceding sentence.  Nor does the linked movie trailer in this post fully convey the subtlety of the film.  It is definitely not a predictable story.

The lead actor is a well-know French comic actor (I'd never heard of him before) and the child actors are all quite good.  Worth seeing if you can find it.  We had to drive 30 minutes to the one theater in our area that's showing it.

  1. Mark, cela me fait plaisir de voir que vous appéciez la cinématographie Québecoise. C'est un très beau film ayant une profondeur émouvante. Bref, un film qui restera longtemps dans vos pensés.

Another one I suggest you see is INCENDIE:
